High Point Central over Page tonight in Overtime:20-14

Courtesy of Mike Ellis from the Jamestown News:

Two good teams battled at Simeon tonight. Defenses dominated. After scoreless 1st qtr, HPC got on the board at 11:20 of 2nd with a 31 yard pass from Justin Johnson to Jamale Mckiver. Hit him in stride at the goal line.

After Central’s Tyler Wilson picked off a Puntam pass on a bad throw, the Bison went up 14 – 0 on an 8 yard pass from Johnson to Juwan Foggie on a slant across the middle.

Page scored to cut the lead to 14 – 7 with 2:43 left in the half on an AJ Capel 4 yard run. The TD was set up when Capel went off right tackle 30 yards to set up the first and goal.

The Page defense took over in the second half and completely shut down the Bison offense. Page threatened numerous times, driving downfield in the third before Kevin Green intercepted Putnam at the 10 yard line to halt a drive. When the defense forced a punt after the interception giving the Page offense a short field, they wnet 35 yards and scored on a 3 yard run by Capel. The TD tying up the game at 14 was set up by a Putnam to Cahlil Grant 20 yard pass play on 3rd and 5 that gave them a first down at the 11.

Neither team could score in the fourth although HP Central did finally pick up their first first down of the second half with 4:38 left in the fourth quarter. Page had an illegal procedure penalty to wipe out a 40 yard pass that would have put them at the Bison 28. Page also moved down to the 14 yard line and completed a pass for a first and goal only to have it wiped out by a holding penalty.

In overtime, the Pirates had the first possession and after three consecutive incomplete passes, they attempted a 27 yard field goal. A snap that was a little wide right threw off the timing and the kick was blocked. The Bison then lost 2 yards on their first snap, had an incomplete pass and on third down Justin Johnson went around right end and barrelled his way into the end zone for the winning TD.

  1. Very good recap Mr. Ellis. Hats off to the Bison for a great win.

Mr. Ellis reported an incredible stat; the Page defense held HPC without a first down until 4:38 to go in the game. Wow. The Pirate defense is proving that after a rocky start they can match up against anyone.

If Page can find a playmaker on offense, the type of player who can carry a team on his shoulders and come through in the clutch, this team still has a shot at the playoffs. There’s still lots of football to be played. And I know Coach Gillespie, Coach Weeks, their staff and players do not accept any excuses. I wish them well and salute them for playing hard and never giving up.
