College Men’s Soccer Final – Guilford 2, Greensboro 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Seniors Greg Carnovale and Freddy Gomez (Valparaiso, Chile/Williams (N.C.)) netted second-half goals in Guilford College’s season-opening 2-1 home win over Greensboro College Friday night.

Carnovale scored the game’s first goal early in the second frame after he settled the ball down off a long ball. In the 49th minute, Greensboro’s Joel Cortez booted a deflection inside the box to bring the Pride back into the game. The Quakers’ earned the game winning goal in the 70th minute when Chris Gillespie fired a shot in the box off of Greensboro’s goalkeeper Woody Wilder that deflected to the feet of Gomez, who booted the ball into the back of the net.

The Pride earned a narrow advantage on the shot count, 13-12. Five of the Quakers’ 12 shots came in the final 21 minutes of play, starting with the Gomez goal. Michael MacVane made four saves in net for the Quakers, including a big stop on a hard Cortez shot in the 60th minute that kept the match tied at 1-1.

The Quakers begin a four-game road swing Sunday (9/2) when they face Averett University at Greensboro College’s Pride Field at 1:00 p.m.
