GC Men’s Soccer Edged by Guilford 2-1 in Season Opener

The Greensboro College men’s soccer team dropped a hard fought 2-1 road decision to cross-town Guilford on Friday night in its season opener.

Following a scoreless first half, Guilford found the scoreboard just 12 seconds into the new frame on an unassisted goal by Greg Carnovale.

The Pride immediately evened the score at 1-1 as Joel Cortez knocked home his first collegiate goal off a deflection in the box. Sporting a young line-up on the field, Greensboro had numerous opportunities to take control of game down the stretch.

However, it was Guilford that found the net for the game winner as Freddy Gomez rebounded a Chris Gillespie shot for the final tally in the 70th minute.

The Pride held a slight 13-12 advantage in shots and attempted ten corner kicks compared to five for the Quakers.

Drew Clukey recorded a team high three shots with Cortez and Isaiah Niji contributing team highs in shots on goal with two apiece. Woody Wilder recorded three saves in goal for Greensboro.

The Pride will look to pick up their first win of the season at home on Sunday against Randolph. Kick-off on Pride Field is scheduled for 4 p.m.
