Greensboro College Volleyball Splits Sunday Matches to Finish Opening Weekend at 3-1

The Greensboro College volleyball team bounced back from a disappointing 3-0 (22-25, 23-25, 16-25) morning loss to Emory & Henry by beating Methodist 3-2 (25-15, 18-25, 25-21, 19-25, 15-8) on Sunday afternoon.

Against Emory & Henry, the Pride held leads late in the first two sets but were unable to fend off a pair of rallies by the Wasps to fall behind 2-0.

In set one, Greensboro took a 19-16 lead before being outscored 9-3 down the stretch. In the second set, The Pride were on top 23-17 but saw Emory & Henry close it out with an 8-0 run. The Pride took the lead early in the final frame but could not hang with the Wasps in the decisive 25-16 final.

Liz Widenhouse led all players in kills with 18. Cortland Phillips set-up the attack with 26 aces. Defensively, Danielle Simpson recorded 18 digs while Olivia Gough finished with 14.

Greensboro recovered nicely against Methodist in the afternoon. The Pride dominated the first set 25-15 before taking a 25-18 loss in set two. Greensboro went ahead again after three with a 25-21 win but could not put the match away in the fourth, losing 25-19. The Pride pulled away in the decisive fifth set for a 15-8 victory.

Greensboro finished the opening weekend at Averett with a 3-1 mark. The Pride will be back in action on Tuesday night at Salem. Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
