Greensboro College Volleyball Sweeps Salem 3-0

(WINSTON-SALEM, NC)–The Greensboro College volleyball team continued its hot start on Tuesday with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-15) win at Salem.
Leading 9-7 in the opening set, The Pride made their first move of the night with a 12-2 run to grab a commanding 21-9 lead. Greensboro closed it out from there, taking the first frame 25-11.

The Pride raced out to a 7-2 advantage in set number two and held off a late charge by the Spirits down the stretch for a 25-21 win and a 2-0 match lead.

The third set saw Greensboro bust open a tight 8-7 score with an 11-3 spurt. This time there would be no late rally by Salem, as The Pride coasted home for the decisive 25-15 third set victory.

Defense was the story of the night for Greensboro, as The Pride limited the Spirits to a -0.067 hitting percentage. The Greensboro attack, meanwhile, put up a .207 mark for the night.

Liz Widenhouse led all players with 11 kills on 18 attempts, with only two errors. Cortland Phillips dished out 22 assists and Danielle Simpson picked up 13 digs on defense.

As a team, The Pride totaled ten service aces, 44 digs and 2.0 blocks. Greensboro hit over .200 in each of the three sets with a .217 percentage in the first set representing the match high.

The Pride improve to 4-1 on the season and will now turn their attention to a big weekend ahead. Greensboro will host its annual tournament, with Agnes Scott, Guilford, Roanoke, and William Peace all taking part. The Pride will play four matches over the weekend – two on Saturday and two on Sunday. Greensboro is scheduled to open play at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Hanes Gym against cross-town rival Guilford.
