Shane Malcolm named Big South Offensive Player of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Senior Shane Malcolm of the High Point University men’s soccer team was named the Big South Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday. Malcolm scored two goals and had two assists to lead HPU to a win in the Flash Gordon Motors Invitational.

Malcolm registered a goal and an assist each in wins over Adelphi and Northern Kentucky at Vert Stadium over the weekend. Against Adelphi on Aug. 31, he assisted on the first goal of the game with a pass from the right flank to freshman Ben Burdon at the near post. He then scored the eventual game-winner in the 55th minute, finishing off an assist from Leon Carby right at the goal mouth.

Two days later against Northern Kentucky, Malcolm got the High Point offense rolling with an assist to sophomore Mamadee Nyepon in the just the second minute of action. Malcolm’s second goal of the weekend came in the 70th minute when senior Shawn Sloan slipped the midfielder in behind the defense and Malcolm finished with a shot to the left to beat the keeper.

Malcolm is the first HPU player to earn Big South Player of the Year honors in 2012. It is the first time in the midfielder’s career that he has earned Player of the Week recognition.

High Point will look to continue its undefeated start to the season this weekend when the team hits the road to take on Navy on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. The game will mark the first-ever meeting between the two squads.
