Volleyball Downs Guilford and Agnes Scott at Greensboro College Invitational

The Greensboro College volleyball team stayed hot on Saturday with two match victories over Guilford and Agnes Scott at the Greensboro College Invitational. The Pride knocked off cross-town rival Guilford 3-1 (21-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-19) on Saturday morning before sweeping Agnes Scott 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-13) in the evening.

After a slow start saw Greensboro fall behind 1-0 against Guilford, The Pride roared back to take the next three sets in impressive fashion. Greensboro never led in the opening set, but kept it close before dropping a 25-21 decision.

The Pride bounced back in set two, using a 5-1 run to pull away from a 16-16 tie. Greensboro rolled to the finish with a 25-18 set win to even the match at 1-1.

Set three saw a similiar finish, as The Pride overturned a 17-16 deficit with a 7-0 run. Greensboro held off one final charge by the Quakers for a 25-20 win and a 2-1 match lead.

The Pride rolled in the finale, opening up leads of 13-8, 18-13 and 23-13. Guilford’s final comeback attempt was squashed quickly as Greensboro closed out the match with a 25-19 victory.

The Pride finished the match with a .229 hitting percentage compared to a .118 attack by the Quakers. Marquenette Fuller posted a .474 average with ten kills on 19 attempts. Liz Widenhouse led the way with a match high 18 kills.

Cortland Phillips set-up the offense with 35 assists and tied Danielle Simpson for a team high ten digs. As a team, Greensboro posted 3.0 blocks with Fuller and Megan Smith recording two block assists apiece.

It was all Greensboro in the evening match against Agnes Scott as The Pride rolled to a three-set sweep. Greensboro held off a feisty Scotties bunch in the first set with a 25-20 win and completed the sweep with victories of 25-15 and 25-13.

Widenhouse recorded another impressive performance with 21 kills on 35 attempts for a total hitting percentage of .429. As a team, The Pride tallied 31 kills and a .208 hitting percentage.

The offense again ran through Phillips, who finished with 20 assists. Danielle Simpson was the only player in double figures in digs with 12.

With the win, Greensboro improves to 6-1 on the season. The Pride will be back in action for day two of the Greensboro College Invitational on Sunday against Roanoke at 12 p.m. and William Peace at 6 p.m.
