College Men’s Soccer Final – Guilford 2, Washington and Lee 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Chris Gillespie’s (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) first two college goals lifted Guilford College to a 2-1 men’s soccer win over visiting Washington and Lee University Saturday. The contest marked the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener for both teams.

Washington and Lee (3-2, 0-1 ODAC) took an early 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when Ben Bayles scored off a corner kick deflection. Just before the end of the first half, Gillespie entered the game and put in his own rebound of a breakway shot, which tied the match at 1-1.

In the 63rd minute, Gillespie broke away from the defense for the Quakers’ (3-3, 1-0 ODAC) game-winning goal thanks to a through ball from Freddy Gomez up the middle of the field.

The shot count ended even at 11-11 after the Quakers held a 7-3 advantage in the first half. Michael MacVane made three saves in net for Guilford while his counterpart, Albert Civitarese, made five stops for the Generals.

The Quakers continue their two-match homestand Wednesday when Guilford hosts Ferrum College at 7 p.m.
