Guilford Downs Pride Women’s Soccer in OT Despite Hat Trick by Gibson

Allison Gibson recorded a hat trick but The Pride women’s soccer team could not overcome Guilford in a 5-4 overtime loss on Monday. Greensboro never led but fought back from three deficits during the course of regulation.

Hannah Schiltz recorded the game winning goal 3:50 into the extra frame on a one-on-one breakaway that was set-up by Sarah Levitt.

Gabrielle Lahowitch got things going for the Quakers with the first goal of the day at the 20:24 mark. Gibson knotted the score four minutes later, taking a through ball from Meredith Kelly to beat the keeper.

Lahowitch struck again, just over one minute after Gibson’s goal, to put Guilford back on top 2-1. Kelli Uresti extended the margin to 3-1 at the 38:06 point.

The Pride narrowed the deficit with one minute remaining in the half as Sarah Hopkins converted an unassisted goal.

Greensboro carried the momentum over to the second half, with Gibson notching her second goal of the day just 18 seconds in to tie the game at 3-3. The Quakers had a quick response again, as Uresti added her second goal ten seconds later.

With less than eight minutes remaining in the game, Gibson earned her hat trick, taking an assist from Meredith Kelly to set-up extra time.

Both teams attempted 22 total shots for the contest, with Guilford holding a slight 10-9 advantage in shots on goal. The Pride, meanwhile, attempted nine corner kicks compared to seven for the Quakers.

Gibson tied for a game high in shots with six and shots on goal with four. Also contributing two shots on goal apiece were Sarah Hopkins and Tiffany Walters. Shireen Unvala took the loss in goal despite making five saves.

With the defeat, Greensboro falls to 2-4 and will look to rebound on Saturday at home against North Carolina Wesleyan. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Pride Field.
