GC Volleyball Falls in USA South Opener to Averett 3-1

The Pride volleyball team opened up its USA South slate on Tuesday night with a 3-1 home loss to Averett (21-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-8).

The Pride took the first set of the night, rallying from down 10-5 to win 25-21. Greensboro broke a 21-21 tie late by scoring the final four points to close it out.

The second set saw the Cougars knot the match at 1-1, breaking open a 13-13 tie for a 25-17 victory.

The Pride opened the third set with three unanswered points before Averett rallied with the next five. The Cougars would extend the margin to as large as nine en route to a 25-18 win.

Averett kick-off the fourth set by scoring the first five points. The Pride narrowed the gap to 7-5 before the Cougars took control for good, pulling away for a decisive 25-8 win.

Liz Widenhouse (12) and Olivia Gough (10) each reached double figures in kills for the night. Cortland Phillips offered up 25 assists while Danielle Simpson led the way defensively with 13 digs.

Greensboro drops to 9-5 on the season and 0-1 in the USA South. The Pride will look to rebound this weekend at a conference tri-match in Maryville. Greensboro will face #5 nationally ranked Christopher Newport and host Maryville on Saturday.
