Greensboro Aquatic Center to Host 2013 Winter Junior National Championship

The Greensboro Aquatic Center (GAC) has been named the site for USA Swimming’s 2013 Speedo Winter Junior National Championships.

The event will take place December 12-14, 2013 and feature the best young swimming talent the United States has to offer.

“USA Swimming is excited to bring the 2013 Speedo Winter Junior National Championships to the Greensboro Aquatic Center,” said Dean Ekeren, National Events & Marketing Director for USA Swimming. “We look forward to exposing young athletes and new fans from the North Carolina area to world-class swimming. The swimming community looks forward to competing in this beautiful new venue and enjoying the Southern hospitality that Greensboro is known for.”

This month marks the one year anniversary of the GAC’s opening to public. Over the past year, the GAC has hosted 36 meets featuring 15,215 participants with a total attendance of 120,820. The impressive first-year calendar included the 2012 YMCA National Short Course Championships (which recently announced it will return in 2013 and 2014), 2012 U.S. Masters Swimming Spring National Championships, U.S. Synchronized Swimming 2012 Olympic Team trials and the AT&T National Diving Championships.

The economic impact of these and other events has been a tremendous boon to the Greensboro economy. The Greensboro Area Convention & Visitors Bureau has projected the economic impact of GAC events to date (through mid-September, 2012) to be nearly $42 million, while the economic impact of all GAC bookings (through 2016) tops $76 million.
