Men’s Soccer – Elon’s Thomas Earns Second National Weekly Honor

ELON, N.C. – Chris Thomas was named the Disney Soccer/National Soccer Coaches Association of America Player of the Week as announced by the association on Wednesday, September 26.

The senior forward is coming off a week in which he scored four goals to help lead the maroon and gold to a pair of wins. Thomas scored twice in both contests – including both game-winners – and is ranked second in the nation in total goals (11), points per game (3.14), total points (22) and goals per game (1.43).

Thomas helped the Phoenix overcome a 1-0 deficit at William & Mary last Wednesday, Sept. 19 when he scored off a Matt Wescoe helper in the 63rd minute then added the golden goal to give Elon a 2-1 overtime victory.

The Snellville, Ga. native netted two more strikes early in the opening stanza of the Phoenix’s 2-0 upset over then sixth-ranked Charlotte. The victory was the program’s highest win versus a ranked opponent since defeating No. 16 Furman in last year’s Southern Conference tournament.

Thomas has now scored in all but one match this season while helping the Phoenix go 5-1-1 in its last seven games. He has scored 41 career goals and trails Mike Wessels’ (1985-89) mark of 43 on the program’s all-time list.

Thomas was also named the College Soccer News National Player of the Week on Monday, Sept. 24 while being honored with his second weekly accolade by the SoCon on Tuesday, Sept. 25.

Thomas will be recognized during the NSCAA College Game of the Week Friday night on FOX Soccer.

The Phoenix returns to the pitch to open SoCon play at Davidson on Friday, Sept. 28. The match is slated to kickoff at 7 p.m.
