College Men’s Soccer Final – Guilford 7, Shenandoah 0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Matthew Poling (Lillington, N.C./Homeschooled) scored his first college hat trick and Freddy Gomez (Valparaiso, Chile/Williams (N.C.)) added two goals in Guilford College’s 7-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) soccer victory over Shenandoah University.

With Saturday’s Homecoming and Family Weekend win, the Quakers (5-5) improve their record inside Appenzeller Field at Armfield Athletic Center to 4-0.

Gomez scored the match’s first two goals, including a penalty kick goal in the ninth minute to put the Quakers on the board. Gomez tallied from Greg Carnovale 10 minutes later, his team-leading seventh goal of the year. Poling closed out the first half with a goal off of a free kick by Colin Dillion.

Poling continued his scoring in the 63rd minute, booting in a Rory Molleda cross inside the six-yard box to boost the Quakers’ lead. Seven minutes later, Ronnie Castellanos (San Pedro Sula, Honduras/North Forsyth (N.C.)) fired a 30-yard shot into the goal to give the Quakers a 5-0 edge. In the 73rd minute, Dillion fed Poling once more, and the sophpomore notched his sixth goal of the season. Chris Gillespie headed in the game’s final goal off a Corey McDonough cross to give the Quakers a 7-0 advantage.

The Quakers outshot Shenandoah, 21-9, and limited the Hornets to just two second-half shots. Junior goalie Michael MacVane made five saves for the Quakers in the first half and Marko Mandalinic relieved in the second half and made one save. James Dutcher had three stops for Shenandoah.

The Quakers return to action Wednesday when Guilford hosts Emory & Henry College at 7 p.m.
