Elon’s Thomas Named SoCon’s Men’s Soccer Player of the Month

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon senior forward Chris Thomas was named the Southern Conference’s Men’s Soccer Player of the Month for September as announced by the league office on Thursday, Oct. 4. Thomas had five multi-goal games and kicked in five game-winners to help the Phoenix go 6-1-1 last month.

Thomas helped the maroon and gold to a 2-1 overtime win at William & Mary on Sept. 19, scoring both goals in the contest including the golden-goal in the extra session. He followed that with two first half strikes in the Phoenix’s 2-0 upset of then sixth-ranked Charlotte on Sept. 22, giving the program its highest win ever against a ranked opponent.

Those performances helped Thomas earn the College Soccer News and Disney Soccer/NSCAA National Player of the Week on Sept. 24. He also earned his second SoCon weekly honor in the month giving him five for his career.

Thomas would add two more scores in Elon’s 2-0 victory at Davidson in its SoCon opener on Sept. 28, tying the school mark of goals scored in a career and in a single season.

Thomas ended the month with 12 goals overall and recently became the program’s all-time leader in goals in a career and for a single-season on Tuesday, Oct. 2, in Elon’s 3-2 win at No. 18 West Virginia. He is currently second in the nation in goals (15) and total points (33).

Elon returns to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 6, to host Furman at Rudd Field. The program is celebrating its 40th anniversary during the match, which is slated to kickoff at 7 p.m.
