Women’s Soccer – Elon and Wofford Battle to Scoreless Draw

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In its first of two Southern Conference road matches this weekend, the Elon University women’s soccer team battled the Wofford Terriers to a scoreless draw on Friday night, Oct. 5, at Snyder Field.

Elon moves to 3-6-5 (1-1-3 SoCon) on the year, while Wofford goes to 6-5-1 (1-3-1 SoCon).

“I was very pleased with the way we defended tonight for all 90 minutes and overtime,” said Phoenix head coach Chris Neal. “Give Wofford credit, they challenged us all night. I’m happy that our team was able to come away with a shutout and I thought Kate Murphy played well in goal. We had a few scoring chances throughout the match, but they just didn’t go in. We look forward to our next match on Sunday at Furman.”

The Phoenix offense managed to get off 12 shots in the match, including five on goal. Elon held Wofford to 10 shots, four of which were on target.

Elon goalie Kate Murphy earned the shutout for the maroon and gold, her fourth clean slate of the season. Murphy played all 110 minutes and tallied four saves.

Shannon Foley nearly put the Phoenix on the scoreboard in the sixth minute, but her header off an Olivia Mackey corner kick ricocheted off the crossbar.

Raychel Diver had the Phoenix’s other lone shot on goal in the first period, but it was saved by Wofford keeper Kimberly Cohn in the ninth minute.

Chelsey Stark nearly put in the match’s first goal just 37 seconds into the second half, but her strike was blocked by the Terriers to keep it scoreless.

Simi Dhaliwal put a pair of strikes on target in the 53rd and 79th minutes, but Cohn saved both chances for the Terriers.

Both squads had limited chances in overtime, with just one total shot in both 10-minute periods.

Elon returns to action on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Greenville, S.C., against Furman.
