College Men’s Soccer Final – Bridgewater 2, Guilford 1

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Gerard Miniaci’s goal in the 53rd minute broke a 1-1 tie and sent host Bridgewater College to a 2-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) soccer win over Guilford College Sunday at a damp and chilly Jopson Field.

The Eagles (9-3, 5-1 ODAC) won for the fourth time in five matches and posted their ninth triumph in 11 outings.

Guilford’s Freddy Gomez (Valparaiso, Chile/Williams (N.C.)) scored his league-leading 10th goal of the season off a Ronnie Castellanos (San Pedro Sula, Honduras/North Forsyth (N.C.)) assist in the 27th minute. Bridgewater tallied the equalizer less than 12 minutes later when Derek Newsome set up Adam Weisenborn for the rookie’s first college goal. The scored remained even at halftime, before Newsome assisted Miniaci’s game-winner a little over seven minutes into the second half.

Bridgewater outshot Guilford, 11-5, in the second half and claimed an 18-12 overall shots advantage. T.J. Martin made three saves in goal for Bridgewater, while the Quakers’ Michael MacVane had six of his team’s seven saves in just over 86 minutes.

The Quakers visit league-rival Randolph College Wednesday (10/10) at 7:00 p.m.
