Greensboro College Names Andy Smith Head Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach

(GREENSBORO, N.C.) — Greensboro College Athletics Director Dan Cetrone announced the hiring of Andy Smith as head men’s and women’s tennis coach. Smith brings extensive head coaching experience to Greensboro – having coached at the Divison I and II levels.

Smith’s most recent head coaching experience came from 2006-2009 as the head women’s tennis coach at Division I North Carolina A&T. Prior to his time at North Carolina A&T University, Smith was the head women’s tennis coach at Division I Georgia State University from 2002-2005. He also served as the head men’s and women’s tennis coach at Gardner-Webb University from 1995-2002 – where he helped transition the programs from Division II to Division I.

During his time at Gardner-Webb, Smith guided the program to two NCAA Division II National qualifiers on the women’s side in 1999 and 2000. Under his watch, the women’s team advanced to three consecutive Division II East Regional Championship matches, including the victories in 1999 and 2000.

Both his men’s and women’s teams at Gardner-Webb were National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Tournament finalists in 2002. His men’s squad earned the NCCAA National Championship in 2001.

In addition to his coaching experience, Smith has also held the role of NCAA site representative at various Division I regional tournament locations.

“I am very excited about coming to Greensboro College,” said Smith. “I would like to thank Dan Cetrone for the opportunity to coach at this great institution. I look forward to building the program future.”

  1. Andy is a good man and will do a great job. On a tennis court, he’s got incredible touch; drop shots, lobs, slice backhand. He can control a ball like few others. And he knows how to teach the game, too. And from what I hear, back in the day he was one heck of a player. Still plays competitively in local USTA league. (and no Andy, he’s no relation to Stan or Davey Boy).

  2. Of the 3, I think he’d beat Steve in tennis, but certainly not a 100 yard dash.

In their primes in tennis, I think the Andy’s (not Durham) would have been a tight match.
