Elon Men’s Soccer – Thomas Earns Third SoCon Weekly Honor

SPARTANBURG, S.C – Elon senior forward Chris Thomas has been named the Southern Conference’s Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Tuesday morning. The weekly accolade is Thomas’ third of the season and sixth in his career tying him with for the most in SoCon history.

Thomas also earned a spot on the College Soccer News National Team of the Week on Monday after helping the Phoenix go 2-0 last week, defeating ranked opponents West Virginia and Furman. Elon improved to 8-2-1 on the season and is nationally ranked for the first time since 2006.

The Snellville, Ga. native scored two goals and assisted on Matt Wescoe’s game-winner in the Phoenix’s 3-2 comeback win at the then 18th-ranked Mountaineers on Tuesday, Oct. 2. He then tallied the golden goal in the maroon and gold’s 1-0 overtime victory against the then 22nd-ranked Paladins on Saturday, Oct. 6. It was Thomas’ sixth game-winner of the season.

Thomas also won SoCon weekly honors on Sept. 11 and Sept. 25 earlier this year and is tied with UNCG’s Randi Patterson (2003-05) for the most in league history.

Thomas currently leads the nation in goals (16), goals per game (1.40) and total points (35). He recently became Elon’s all-time leader in goals scored in a career and single-season while also setting the mark for points in a single year.

Thomas and the Phoenix return to the pitch tonight for SoCon play hosting Wofford at Rudd Field. Kickoff is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
