HPU Athletics Adds Newson as Director of Compliance

Lynn Newson recently joined the High Point University Athletic Department as Director of Compliance. Newson most recently was Assistant Director of Compliance/Eligibility at Florida International University from 2010-12.

“We are very happy to welcome Lynn Newson to our Athletic Department,” said HPU Athletic Director Craig Keilitz. “Lynn brings a wealth of experience and is a great fit for High Point University. I feel that our compliance and eligibility efforts will be stronger than ever with Lynn working alongside Assistant Athletic Director for Internal Operations Jared Micklos. Lynn will be a great resource for our coaches.”

As Director of Compliance, Newson will be responsible for monitoring, educating and enforcing all aspects of institutional, conference and NCAA regulations. She will assist HPU’s coaches in the recruiting process and provide guidelines for areas such as academic evaluations, campus visits and National Letters of Intent. Newson will also be the Athletic Department’s liaison to the registrar’s office and will ensure initial and continuing eligibility of High Point’s student-athletes.

Newson has several years of experience that will be valuable to her new position at HPU, particularly her previous two stops at Florida International and Northern Arizona.

At FIU, Newson coordinated the continuing eligibility of all student-athletes, the certification of incoming transfer student-athletes as well as the investigation of possible violations. Other duties included monitoring and educating coaches and staff in regard to NCAA compliance. She worked extensively with women’s basketball, volleyball, sand volleyball, baseball and swimming & diving.

Prior to FIU, Newson was the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance at Northern Arizona. She was responsible for the development, implementation, and monitoring of all policies and procedures relative to compliance. That included areas such as recruiting, eligibility, financial aid, student-athlete employment, amateurism and extra benefits. She supervised a full-time compliance coordinator and was responsible for investigating and submitting violations. She was also a liaison to the NCAA.

Newson served as Compliance Assistant at La Salle University from 2007-08, where she was responsible for determining eligibility status, monitoring recruiting, and working with coaches and staff on NCAA compliance. She also has experience with the Paragon Marketing Group, Villanova University and Temple University.

Newson earned two bachelor’s degrees from Point Park University in Pittsburgh, Pa., where she was also a member of the women’s basketball team. Newson is the Pioneers’ fifth-leading scorer (1,438 career points), sixth-leading rebounder (866 career rebounds) and was recently inducted to the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

She earned her master’s degree in Sport and Recreation Administration from Temple in 2007.
