Randy Curry Joins HPU Track & Field Staff

The High Point University track & field team has added Randy Curry as a volunteer assistant coach, head coach Mike Esposito announced on Monday. Curry is a professional sprinter and was a multiple-time NCAA Div. II national champion at St. Augustine’s College in Raleigh, N.C.

Curry ran for St. Augustine’s from 2006-09, earning several All-America honors. He competed in four NCAA Div. II national championships, helping the Falcons to three team titles in those four seasons. Curry was a member of four national-champion 4×400 relay teams.

In his first season at St. Augustine’s – the 2007 indoor season – Curry placed third in the 400-meter and was a member of the winning 4×400 relay at the NCAA Div. II Championship, helping the Falcons win the team title.

Curry also helped St. Augustine’s to national championships during the 2008 indoor season and 2009 outdoor season. Curry was runner-up in the 400-meter and ran on the winning 4×400 relay during the indoor 2008 season. He placed fourth in the 400 and ran on the winning 4×400 relay at the 2008 outdoor championship as St. Augustine’s finished second to Abilene Christian. In Curry’s final collegiate season – the 2009 outdoor season – he was a member of the national champion 4×400 relay team and St. Augustine’s won the team championship again.

Curry’s most impressive collegiate accomplishment might have been his part in the NCAA Div. II record-setting 4×400 relay. Curry and teammates Rashaud Johnston, Antonio Abney and Josh Scott combined to run a time of 3:02.10 at the 2009 Penn Relays, finishing second only to Florida State. Curry was credited with an official split of 45.1.

Curry continues to train and compete professionally in the 400-meter. He ran in HPU’s VertKlasse Meeting last March and placed third in the 400-meter. He has a career best of 45.20 in the 400-meter and, last spring, posted a season best of 46.24.

Curry earned his bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems from St. Augustine’s. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree at UNC Greensboro. Originally from Atlanta, he attended Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Atlanta before going to St. Augustine’s.
