College’s Men’s Soccer Final: Guilford 2, Hampden-Sydney 0

GREENSBORO, N.C.—-Seniors Greg Carnovale and Freddy Gomez (Valparaiso, Chile/Williams (N.C.)) scored a goal a piece for Guilford College in a 2-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) soccer win over Hampden-Sydney College.

In the 51st minute, senior Ronnie Castellanos (San Pedro Sula, Honduras/North Forsyth (N.C.)) deflected a cross to Carnovale for his fourth goal of the season. Seven minutes later, Castellanos was tackled in the box and Guilford was awarded a penalty kick. Freddy Gomez booted the penalty kick into the net for his 12th goal of the season and 42nd of his career.

Hampden-Sydney held a narrow advantage in shots 11-10. Michael MacVane made four stops in net for the Quakers. Blake Carrey had three saves for the Tigers before being relieved by Jeff Bone in the closing minutes.

With the win, the Quakers (10-7, 7-4 ODAC) clinched a spot in the ODAC Tournament and await announcement of their opponent later in the week.
