GC Men’s Soccer Dealt 3-2 Setback at Averett

The Greensboro College men’s soccer team suffered a 3-2 road defeat to Averett in the final regular season game on Wednesday. The Pride have locked up a USA South tournament berth, but must now wait for their postseason fate.

The Cougars scored the first goal of the game at the 32:19 mark as Magnus Ferngren took a through ball from John Thrower and placed it in the bottom right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Logan Paussa evened the game at 1-1 with three seconds remaining in the first half, converting a free kick off the cross bar.

Averett took control in the first 25 minutes of the second half, putting two goals on the board to grab a 3-1 advantage.

Tyler McLemore gave Greensboro a fighting chance in the 83rd minute, rebounding a blocked shot for the final margin of 3-2.

Despite the defeat, The Pride out shot the Cougars 12-9 overall and finished tied in shots on goal at 4-4. Greensboro also attempted nine corner kicks compared to six for Averett.

Morgan Stevenson, George Dimopoulos, Logan Paussa and Earl Floyd each finished with 12 shots for The Pride. Manbi Nyepon took the loss in goal.

Greensboro concluded the regular season at 10-4-3 overall and 3-2-3 in the conference. The USA South tournament is scheduled to kick-off on Saturday. The top eight teams will make the tournament, with the top four teams hosting first round games. The semi-finals and finals will be played on November 2-3 at Martinsville, VA.
