NCHSAA Girl’s Golf Advance

CHAPEL HILL—Top golfers from across the state will compete next week in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s 32nd women’s state golf championships.

For the 10th year in a row, the NCHSAA is offering classified championships , and for the second consecutive year there will be three different state championships as the number of schools competing in the sport has grown. The two-day events will be held on Monday and Tuesday at three different sites.

The 4-A championship is set for Pinehurst number six, while the 3-A golfers will compete at Longleaf Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines. The 1-A/2-A classification will be held at the West Course at Foxfire Resort and Golf Club in Foxfire Village.

Players and teams qualified to the state championship from regionals across the state.

Raleigh Athens won last year’s 4-A team title, its third women’s golf state crown in four years. Victoria Allred of Pfafftown Reagan is back to defend her individual title after earning the championship as a sophomore a year ago.

Ledford captured the 3-A title a year ago, and last year’s medalist Tara Simmons of Pikeville Charles B. Aycock has qualified for the finals as an individual. Salisbury took top honors among 1-A/2-A teams last year and Salisbury’s Isabella Rusher is the defending individual champ.

The best three scores for a team, which may have up to five individuals, are counted each day toward the team total. All three championship courses are set for par 71 and approximately 5,700 yards.

The championships will include a field of 78 golfers in all three tournaments. Golfers are scheduled to tee off at nine o’clock Monday morning. Players will be paired differently and tee times adjusted for Tuesday’s round, based on Monday’s scores.
