Vandalia Christian School boys soccer team won the NCCSA state soccer championship Saturday in Wilson, N.C. It was the school’s first state championship since 1994 and the first for head coach Jason McCall, a “93 VCS alumnus.

In the Friday night semi-final game, Jeffrey Welker’s 14 saves in the goal led a determined defensive effort as a late second half goal by Josh McClellan proved to be enough as VCS defeated Wilson Christian, the number one team from the East Region, 1-0.

On Saturday morning, the Vikings squared off against Wilmington Christian who had defeated Alamance Christian on Friday by penalty kicks (4-2). Once again, a stiff defensive effort, including 6 saves by Jeffrey Welker, shut out the Patriots 2-0.

The VCS goals both came in the first half. The first one on a header by Houston Miller, followed about 10 minutes later by Josh McClellan on a put back off a kick by Storm Summers.

VCS also placed Josh McClellan and Storm Summers on the NCCSA first team all-state squad, while Michael Matthews and Houston Miller were each selected for second-team honors.
