College Men’s Golf News – Guilford Tabbed to Host NCAA Division III Championships in 2014 and 2015

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College, the Greensboro Sports Commission and the NCAA are pleased to announce the Grandover Resort and Conference Center as the host site of the 2014 and 2015 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf National Championships. The three organizations also hosted the event in 2011.

The dates of the 2014 tournament are May 13-16. The 2015 tournament is set for May 12-15. Grandover will be the first site to host the championships in successive years.

Guilford and the Greensboro Sports Commission will co-host the tournament, which in 2013 will feature 41 teams and 210 students. “The Greensboro Sports Commission appreciates the confidence the NCAA has placed in Greensboro to deliver a first-class experience for these exceptional student-athletes,” said Sports Commission President Kim Strable. “We’re honored to bring this national championship back to ‘Tournament Town’ for two consecutive years and to again partner with Guilford College.”

“We enjoyed our experience with Grandover and the Sports Commission in 2011 and look forward to again showcasing our college and city,” said Guilford Athletics Director Tom Palombo. “Guilford’s strong tradition in national golf tournaments and Greensboro’s reputation as a top-notch host make this event a great fit for our community.”

Guilford has made 29 national tournament appearances over the past 35 years. The Quakers won the 2002 and 2005 NCAA Division III titles and finished second in 2001 and 2010. Guilford also won the 1989 NAIA National Tournament and hosted the event in 1979.

The city of Greensboro boasts two of Division III’s top men’s golf teams. Guilford and Greensboro College are currently ranked eight and 20th, respectively, in the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches’ Poll. The Quakers are 11th in the current Golfstat.com Division III Head-to-Head ratings, while the Pride sits 33rd. Greensboro won the 2011 crown at Grandover and Guilford finished 11th.

The NCAA played its Division I Men’s Golf Greensboro Regional at Grandover last May. The city of Greensboro hosted the 1988 Division III Golf Championships with Greensboro College at the Greensboro Country Club Farm Course. The city also hosted NCAA Division I Championships in men’s basketball (1974 Final Four) and women’s soccer (1997, 1998), as well as several NCAA Division III soccer championships.

“We are privileged that the NCAA chose Greensboro as the 2014 and 2015 site for the Division III men’s golf championship,” said Henri Fourrier, President of the Greensboro Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Greensboro gained national exposure when the event was hosted here in 2011 at Grandover Resort. The return of this championship confirms Greensboro’s reputation as a leading sports destination.”

The Grandover Resort sits on the south side of Greensboro among 1,500 acres of oak, pine, and dogwood-covered hills. David Graham and Gary Panks designed two 18-hole golf courses, which were both ranked “4½ Stars” by Golf Digest and are listed among “America’s Best Places to Play.”

The 2013 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships will be held at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Miramar Beach, Fla.
