HPU Men’s Golf Tied For 10th After Day One At The Hummingbird Intercollegiate

SAPPHIRE, N.C. – The High Point University men’s golf team shot a combined 307 in the first round of the Hummingbird Intercollegiate and finished the day in a tie for 10th place on Saturday in Sapphire, N.C. Senior Chase Wilson was the low scorer on the day for HPU with a 75.

“This was probably our worst round since the first tournament of the season,” had coach Greg Flesher said. “We made some silly mistakes which led to some big numbers that are tough to recover from. The guys are pretty angry with how they performed so I think we will come out with a fire and play with pride tomorrow. We are a much better team than how we played today.”

Wilson had one birdie on the day while firing a four-over 75 to end the day in a tie for 35th. Wilson finished one-stroke ahead of teammate Sam Stewart who shot a 76 to finish in a tie for 38th.

Sophomore Charles Valluzzo had the most birdies on the day for the Panthers with four and finished in a tie for 43rd with a 77. Freshman McKay Tye shot a 79 and finished in a tie for 62nd and senior Brian Sullivan carded an 82 and finished in 75th.

Samford leads the team standing after day one with a combined score of 282. Belmont is four-stroke back in second with a score 286. Wofford fired a 292 in the first round and is in third while Francis Marion and Gardner-Webb are tied for fourth with matching scores of 295.

GWU’s Daley Byles sits atop the individual standings after carding a four-under 67 on the day. He leads by one stroke over Belmont’s Ashton Van Horne and Wofford’s Cory Taylor.

High Point will return to the Country Club of Sapphire on Sunday, Nov. 4, for the second and final round of the Hummingbird Intercollegiate. It will be HPU’s final round of the fall season.
