HPU Men’s Golf Finishes 12th At The Hummingbird Intercollegiate

SAPPHIRE, N.C. – The High Point University men’s golf team shot a combined 299 in the second and final round of the Hummingbird Intercollegiate in Sapphire, N.C., on Sunday to finish the event in 12th place with a total score of 606. Sophomore’s Charles Valluzzo and Sam Stewart tied as HPU’s top finishers with matching scores of 151.

“We played pretty flatt all week,” head coach Greg Flesher said. “I was glad that some of our guys put up some pretty good scores today but for the most part we were just flat. I think we were tired coming off a tough tournament at Kiawah. We did improve and I was glad to see that. Overall I think that this fall was very promising. The future looks good for HPU golf.”

After turning in a 77 in the first round, Valluzzo shot a three-over 74 on Sunday to finish the event in a tie for 39th with a score of 151. Valluzzo tied Stewart who shot a 75 after carding a 76 in the opening round.

Freshman McKay Tye had the low round of the day for the Panthers, shooting a two-over 73 to finish in a tie for 43rd with a total score of 152 (79-73). Tye finished one-stroke ahead of senior Chase Wilson who shot a 78 in the second round to end the Intercollegiate in a tie for 47th with a score of 153 (75-78). Senior Brian Sullivan carded a 77 on Sunday and finished in a tie for 69th with a total score of 159 (82-77).

Samford remained atop the team standings, shooting a combined 288 in the second round and claiming the title with a total score of 570. Host Western Carolina and Blemont tied for second with matching scores of 582. The Catamounts had the low round of the day with a 284 to move into second. Gardner-Webb (585) finished in fourth while Francis Marion and Wofford (589) tied for fifth.

Samford’s Casey O’Toole shot a two-under 69 to take the individual medal with a 36-hole score of 138. O’Toole won by three strokes over a pair of Gardner-Webb teammates, Daniel Kim and Daley Byles, who each carded a two-round score of 141.

With the conclusion of the Hummingbird Intercollegiate the Panthers have reached the end of their fall schedule.
