Greensboro College Athletics Department Wins $500 for Special Olympics

(GREENSBORO, N.C.) — The Greensboro College athletics department recently won $500 towards its next Special Olympics activity. The Pride were recognized after winning the NCAA Division III Special Olympic Spotlight Poll for the month of October.

Each month, the NCAA headlines three Division III schools or conferences for their involvement with Special Olympics. Greensboro was featured for a September release (CLICK HERE to read) highlighting the bond developed with Special Olympics Greensboro.

The Pride accumulated 66% of the total votes, easily outpacing fellow Spotlight participants Colorado College and Stevenson University.

“Two years ago, Greensboro College opened it’s doors and hearts to SOGG (Special Olympics Guilford/Greensboro) soccer and since then, our athletes, coaches, and families have found a home at Greensboro College,” said SOGG Director Charyl Clark. “Athletes from SOGG and Greensboro College have become teammates on the field and friends off the field. We are so excited that Greensboro College has won this much deserving award and look forward to additional joint activities in the future”

In addition to the $500 monetary reward, Greensboro College will also be recognized in the NCAA Division III Monthly Newsletter and on NCAA Division III social media channels.

“It is fantastic to have won the Division III National Special Olympics Spotlight and for Greensboro College to be awarded the monetary prize to be used towards future Special Olympics events,” said Pride Men’s Soccer Coach and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Supervisor John Trice. “We have a terrific group of student-athletes at Greensboro College who strive to excel in the classroom, on the field, and in the community. The relationship they are building with Special Olympics Greensboro is tremendous. Our athletic department is thrilled to have the ability to donate this prize to Special Olympics Greensboro.”
