Seahawks Fly In For Sunday Elon Women’s Basketball Game with Phoenix

ELON, N.C. – After a win over VCU in its home opener, the Elon women’s basketball team (1-1) continues its four-game home stand with a match up against in-state opponent UNC Wilmington (0-2) on Sunday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for youth 12 and under.

Scouting the Seahawks
UNCW is coming off back-to-back Postseason WNIT appearances but has started the season 0-2 after falling to ranked-opponent West Virginia and to Wake Forest by one point on Wednesday. The Seahawks are averaging 53 points and 43 rebounds per game. Kelva Atkins has recorded 21 points so far this season to average 10.5 ppg, while Karneshia Garrett has pulled down 24 boards to average 12 in the two contests.

The Series
The Seahawks own the all-time series over the Phoenix, 3-2, after a 73-68 win in the last meeting on Nov. 24, 2007.

Last Time Out
Elon picked up its first win of the season in its home opener on Monday with a 74-58 victory over VCU. The Phoenix was down by 12 in the first half before a 29-5 run that spanned 14 minutes and both halves gave the maroon and gold a sturdy 12-point advantage. Elon had four players – Ali Ford (21), Kelsey Harris (14), Kelsey Evans (13) and Zora Stephenson (11) – score in double figures, while the defense recorded 10 blocks.

Evans’ Big Night
Kelsey Evans had a career night against VCU on Monday. The senior scored her first double-double of the season with 13 points and a career-high 17 boards. Evans also dished out a career-high four assists and tied her career-high with five blocks.

Connections
Elon assistant coach Emily Roberts will be playing a familiar team on Sunday in UNCW. Roberts played for the Seahawks from 2002-2005, playing in 27 games in her final season and scoring 94 points, tallying 48 assists and 16 steals.

Coat Drive
Elon’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee is currently collecting new or gently used coats for Allied Churches of Alamance County. SAAC will collect coats of all sizes, as well as other cold-weather apparel such as hats, gloves and scarves, at all home basketball games through Dec. 13. Anyone that brings a coat to the women’s game against Morgan State on Thursday, Dec. 13, will get in for free.

The Phoenix will return to Alumni Gym for its third straight home game on Saturday, Nov. 24, against American. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
