Greensboro College Women’s Basketball Storms Past Mary Washington 55-41

(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) — The Pride women’s basketball team trailed for a total of 1:36 as it rolled past Mary Washington 55-41 on Saturday night at the Methodist Univerisity Turkey Shootout. Greensboro nearly led wire-to-wire and broke open a tight game in the second half for its first win of the season.

After falling behind 2-0, The Pride used a 9-1 spurt to grab a 9-3 advantage just over four minutes into the game. The lead would grow to 20-12 following a lay-up by Alicia Burr with 9:46 on the first half clock.

Mary Washington clawed its way back, pulling to within 20-19 after a 7-0 run. Greensboro would push the margin to 27-21 before going into the break with a 27-24 lead.

The Eagles would take their second lead of the night in the opening minutes of the second half, going ahead 30-29. The Pride responded again with a 6-0 run to go back on top 35-30 and would never trail again.

Greensboro continued to add cushion, gradually growing the advantage to double digits at 45-35 on a three-point bucket by Kamia Strickland with eight minutes remaining. Strickland’s three capped a 16-5 Pride run that covered nearly six minutes.

Mary Washington would come no closer than eight points down the stretch as Greensboro pulled away for the 55-41 final.

Bianca Richburg led all scorers on the night with 17 points. Richburg notched a double-double, with a game high 12 rebounds as well. Also contributing double figures in scoring was Chevena Pickard with 16 points. Pickard recorded 11 of her points in the first half.

Overall, Greensboro shot 44.4% from the field while limiting the Eagles to 34.0% shooting, including a dismal 1-9 from beyond the arc. The Pride won despite being outrebounded 45-35.

Greensboro is now 1-1 on the season and will conclude the Turkey Shootout on Sunday at 5 p.m. against Virginia Wesleyan.
