HPU’s Brown Earns Second Big South Men’s Basketball Freshman Honor

High Point University forward John Brown has been named Big South Freshman of the Week for the second time, the conference announced on Monday. Brown averaged 11.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals in a pair of games last week.

In the one-point loss at Western Michigan and the 63-point win over Johnson & Wales last week, Brown shot 60 percent (6-of-10) from the floor and 84.6 percent (11-of-13) from the free-throw line.

At Western Michigan, Brown scored 10 points with three rebounds and three steals. He went 3-for-4 from the floor in 22 minutes of play.

Against Johnson & Wales on Sunday, Brown scored 13 points with seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks in just 17 minutes on the floor. He went 3-for-6 from the floor and shot 7-for-7 from the line.

Brown is averaging a team-high 16.3 points along with 5.6 rebounds per game. He is leading HPU with 2.3 blocks and 2.1 steals per game in his redshirt-freshman season. He was previously named Big South Freshman of the Week after scoring 28 points with eight rebounds, five steals and three blocks in HPU’s win over UNC Greensboro in the season opener. Guard Adam Weary was named Big South Freshman of the Week on Nov. 26.

High Point is 4-3 overall and takes on Wake Forest on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Panthers took an 87-83 loss to the Demon Deacons at the Millis Center last year. The game preceeds an 11-day break before High Point hosts Western Michigan on Dec. 16.
