Western @ SW Boys Basketball

For the first time this season the Cowboys of Southwest played hosts and got to play in front of the best student section in the area. Visiting the Ranch were the Hornets of Western Guilford.

A lopsided victory by the Cowboys just last Tuesday was certainly fresh on everyone’s mind coming into tonight’s non-conference clash. The Hornets came out strong and got up 7-2 very early, but with a tip in that made it 7-4 by Southwest’s Terrell Leach marked his 1,000th career point.

With the student section loudly behind them, the Cowboys fought back and managed to get back in the game and traded baskets and end the first frame level at 17 apiece. The second quarter was a back and forth afair with each team taking the lead and trading it back, but ultimately SW took a 36-34 lead into the halftime.

A discussion of focus, discipline, and unselfishness during the break was very effective with the Cowboys turning on the jets to open up the frame. Smothering pressure by the Cowboys lead to a 13-0 run in the opening frame of the second half, helping them double up the Hornets in the third, to take a 68-50 lead headed into the final quarter.

The final quarter started with each team traded baskets several possessions, but the in the end, a total team effort by Southwest was just too much for the visiting Hornets as Southwest cruised to their 4th straight victory at 88-62. Western was lead by Styles Freeman with 14 points. Southwest was paced by Terrell Leach (36), Michael Bryant (12), and Tyliek Brister (11).
