We lost our High Point connection this morning, as a family mourns the loss of Greg Johnson

I will talk about this more later on today and down the road, but at 9:30am this morning at a Hospice Care Center in Winston-Salem, two kids lost their dad, a mom lost her son, a sister lost her brother and so many others lost a friend that can never be replaced…

Greg Johnson died this morning, taken home by cancer…..I don’t know Greg’s exact age, I would guess he was in his late 40’s and the crux of what Greg did was, he raised two children, Little Will and Little Taylor, as I will always remember them and Greg raised them as a single male parent…

Greg played football, basketball and baseball at East Surry High School and after high school, he played basketball for one year at Elon, for coach Bill Miller and Bill Morningstar…

Greg’s old high school baseball coach, Barry Hall, is still coaching up at East Surry and he has been there for over 40 years…(Greg always kept up with his old coach, Mr. Hall.)

The truth of what Greg did though lies in the lives of those two kids…He raised them on his own and I have never asked him about that and it was none of my business, but the end result of what Greg leaves behind is outstanding….

You look at ‘Little Taylor’, now a junior at the University of Alabama and you look at ‘Little Will’, now a high school senior at High Point Central….

Taylor, a part of the cross country team and the soccer team while in high school at HP Central and an outstanding student…Will, on the baseball team for the Central Bison and he just kicked two 52-yard field goals this season for the Bison’ football team..Just a great senior season for Will at Central…

Now here at Christmas their dad is gone….

I remember ‘Little Taylor’, as maybe 6-7 years old in the back of Greg’s car, reading a book….A little kid missing a tooth and reading a book…Taylor was always reading a book in her spare time….First saw ‘Little Will’ when he was around three years old and he followed his dad everywhere he went….

For Greg Johnson it was all about those kids, and that is why they turned out so good…Greg did a great/super job of raising Taylor and Will….

Cancer has called Greg Johnson home, but a big part of Greg Johnson will always be here with us…

If not for Greg, the High Point teams would have never gotten the coverage that they did on this site…Greg was there for us with High Point Central, Andrews and Southwest updates on Friday nights….Greg had the JV scores for us on Thursday nights…Greg had the basketball scores for us, the baseball scores for us, everything that went on in High Point sports-wise, we knew about because of Greg Johnson…

Greg had a passion for the sports and he made it a point to keep up with what was going on….If he didn’t have it, he would get it…I kept in contact with Greg every day of week….High Point Enterprise, Charlotte Observer, News and Observer, Greg was on them all…Bennie Phillips, San Quentin Quayle, Ogi Overman, Mike Ellis, Al Thomy, he read them all over the years…

Greg got us in with Coach Wayne Jones at High Point Central and Coach Grant, Derek Grant’s dad…He had his buddy Clarence, there was Paul Douglas with all the Southwest Guilford inside news and his old buddy Tommy Glasgow…

Greg followed JB Burrito, Albert McLean(old #45 at Ferndale), the Lynch kid that used to play in right field for Ferndale, big booster of Jimmy Moorman, Rubin Crosby, the Wilson brothers, Justin Johnson, Duncan and Walt Sparks(Ragsdale), Coach Ken Helms, Coach Kenny Angel, we used to talk about them all….

Greg was on board with Byron Tucker at WPCM 920AM in Burlington and with JD Higgins at 98.1FM in Galax, Virginia…Greg followed beach music, country music, talk radio and he really was tight into the sports….

He would help any kid in High Point and if they were a friend of Will or Taylor, Greg would go out of his way to make that kid had help if they needed it…Greg would give them a ride or help out any way he could…Greg was good friends with the Adams Family(Drew, his parents and his sister)….

Greg Johnson was there for you and he put High Point sports on the map for us and he gave us a chance to branch out into that direction….

But to finish up with the key thought here, “Greg Johnson gave his kids the proper direction”….He took care of them and made sure all was right in their world before he left this world and we are all much better off today for having had the opportunity to see and know a man like Greg Johnson….Look for Will and Taylor to do great things and their daddy will be with them every step of the way…

Used to talk sports with Greg each and every day and just want to say thanks to Greg for being such a good father, son, brother, friend and ‘Sports Nutt’….

Thanks Greg and you may you Rest in Peace, knowing that Will and Taylor will make you proud……
