FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Matt McCarthy (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) scored a career-high 21 points in Guilford College’s 84-61 basketball win at Methodist University Wednesday night. Rookie Zeb Richardson (West Jefferson, N.C./Ashe County) contributed 17 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, both career bests, to Guilford’s (10-2) fifth straight win and the Quakers’ eighth win in nine outings.
After two Desmond Parker free throws gave the host Monarchs (3-8) a 15-13 lead, Guilford ripped off the next 14 points en route to a 41-24 halftime lead. Richardson scored five of his 13 first-half points during the spurt. He also collected 11 boards in the first half, compared to Methodist, which had 18 caroms in the opening period.
McCarthy, a 6-3 shooting guard, completed a four-point play just before halftime and added two of his career-high six three-pointers early in the second half, which raised Guilford’s margin to 54-30 with 15 minutes left in regulation. He made four-of-five trifectas in the second half, during which time Methodist drew no closer than 16 points.
Redshirt-freshman Ben Stevenson (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) added a career-best 12 points off the bench for Guilford and Jake Hopkins (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) added 10 points and seven rebounds. Senior Josh Pittman (Archdale, N.C./Trinity), Guilford’s leading scorer, struggled to score six points on a two-for-10 shooting night, but dished out a career- and game-best 11 assists. He moved into ninth place among Guilford’s career assists leaders (252).
Keemon Ingram led Methodist with 10 points. The home-standing Monarchs shot less than 35 percent from the floor and were outrebounded, 44-35.
Guilford returns home after five straight road games to host Hampden-Sydney College Saturday (1/5) in a key Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest at 4:00 p.m. The Tigers carry an 11-1 record into the contest and are ranked 24th in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll.

Those that don’t go to Guilford should go to Greensboro College(Luqman Tijani from Page is doing good things there), UNCG or N.C. A&T….
Those are also very good schools, Guilford seems to have just seen the green light and they have gone after more local kids….
UNCG and N.C. A&T need to do the same and I can’t for the life of me see why UNCG doesn’t have at least one or two local kids on their roster….A&T will locals now that Darren Corbett is over there helping Cy Alexander….
Montrell Goldston or John Terry(GDS) would be good fits for A&T or UNCG…..

I agree 100% Andy. If these programs would recruit 2-3 local kids that want to go to school within a 1-2 hour drive of home, then it gives the school something extra to market against. You normally either go to a game because you went to the school or they have a good team (or playing someone good). Another good reason to go is to support someone you know or knew from the past. Most of these local colleges have very few locals attending their games beyond the students and die heart alumi fans. Get local players and promote the team to get added local fans. Once people come to your games, then you are more likely to get them coming back.
I agree and I hope Jonathan Frye gets to begin playing for Appalachian State in the second semester and if not, I would like to see him come home and play for Guilford….
Great kid, coming off some tough concussions and I wish him the best at App, but would love to see on the court with the Quakers…Have seen him play in their gym before and he does well there…He really did with Northern over there versus Northwest back in his high school days and he attended Early College at Guilford, while still in high school…
Bryan Jones needs to be taking notes on all of this….He is the Quaker historian….
Frye at Guilford would be wonderful! If he can overcome the health issues, it’d be fun to see the sharpshooter bring his talents back to the Boro! On another note, Guilford’ s Pittman dropped 20+ during a young Ingram’ s first varsity game at Southern Guilford but had kind words for Ingram afterwards. After Methodist freshman Ingram held GC’ s leading scorer to 6 points, Pittman still had kind, encouraging words after the game. In these circles, we call that a “class act”.
