College Men’s Basketball Final – Guilford 68, #24 Hampden-Sydney 54

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freshman Zeb Richardson (West Jefferson, N.C./Ashe County) scored a game-high 14 points in Guilford College’s 68-54 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win over nationally ranked Hampden-Sydney College Saturday. The loss ended Hampden-Sydney’s nine-game winning streak.

The Quakers (11-2, 3-1 ODAC) scored the game’s first seven points and never trailed in their sixth straight victory. Guilford’s defense held the Tigers (11-2, 3-1 ODAC) to a season-low 32.3 percent shooting from the floor, nearly 20 points lower than their league-leading season average.

Guilford shot a blistering 57.1 percent from the floor in the first half, which helped build a 36-29 halftime lead. Richardson led all scorers with eight points at intermission.

The Quakers came out firing again in the second half and scored 21 of the period’s first 30 points. Two Travis Tracy free throws capped the half-opening spurt and opened a 57-38 edge with 10:28 left in regulation.

Hampden-Sydney, ranked 24th in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, came to life with about seven minutes to play and trimmed the Quakers’ lead 12 two minutes later. However, the Tigers’ shooting woes resumed as they made only two of their next nine shots. Guilford’s Richardson converted four free throws and teammate Jake Hopkins (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) scored in the paint to restore the Quakers’ edge to 65-47 with 2:06 left in regulation.

Richardson’s 14 led three Quakers in double-figure scoring. Matt McCarthy scored 12 points on four three-point baskets and Josh Pittman (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) added 12 for Guilford. Hopkins finished with six markers and collected a career- and game-best 13 rebounds.

Greg Lewis (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) paced Hampden-Sydney with 13 points and Khobi Williamson added 12. Senior Harrison George (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville) finished with eight points, nine rebounds, two blocks and three steals for the Tigers.

Guilford plays Wednesday (1/9) at league-rival Emory & Henry College at 7:00 p.m.
