BOYS GAME
Ragsdale 52
Northwest Guilford 66

Ragsdale (7-9, 1-3)	10	13	10	19	-	52
Northwest Guilford (12-4, 3-1)	11	16	18	21	-	66

Northwest Guilford visited Ragsdale on Tuesday in a Piedmont Triad Conference match-up. After a tight first quarter that saw Northwest take an 11 – 10 lead on a Nick Powell three point shot in the final minute. The Tigers jumped back into the lead at the start of the second as Joe Bryant opened the quarter with a trey and James Stepp followed with a foul shot to go up 14 – 11. After a Colson Everett long range bucket, Bryant answered with another three and Khalil Whitaker followed with another Ragsdale basket to go up by five at 19 – 14. That would prove to be the highlight of the night for the Tigers. From there Northwest went on a 10 – 0 run over the next four and a half minutes to take a five point lead of their own and they never trailed again. Ragsdale got within one with thirty seconds left in the half before Jalen Gore hit a three pointer with 9 seconds left to give the Vikings a four point lead at the half at 27 – 23.

The Vikings expanded the lead to 12 at the end of the third as their defense was outstanding in the quarter, keeping Ragsdale from running their offense and getting any open looks and limiting them to one shot. It only got worse in the fourth as the Tigers were forced to foul in an attempt to get back in the game and Northwest hit 11 of 16 foul shots over the final 3:29 of the game to wrap up a decisive 66 – 52 win.

Northwest had three players in double figures with Nick Powell leading the way with 16 points followed by Cody Hylton with 15 and Colson Everett with 14. Northwest did an excellent job all night in running their offense. It was a deliberate, pass oriented attack and they scored repeatedly on “back door cuts”.

Ragsdale was led by Joe Bryant who led all scorers with 22 points but was the only Tiger in double figures. The Tigers struggled on the offensive end, unable to penetrate against the tenacious Viking defense and they were unable to get any open looks at the basket.

GIRLS GAME
Ragsdale 40
Northwest Guilford 51

Ragsdale (4-12, 1-3)	7	12	21	9	-	49
NW Guilford (5-10, 2-2)	13	16	11	11	-	51

Northwest wasted little time in taking command of the game at Ragsdale, jumping out to a 9 – 0 lead and never trailing in the game on Tuesday night. They led by 15 at the half by a 29 – 14 score. The Vikings went up by as many as 22 points in the third quarter before Ragsdale rallied and got to within 10 at 47 – 37 before finally falling by a 51 – 40 final. Ragsdale played the game without two of their starters as Jordan Quick and Jasmine Williams were both out with injuries and they were no match for the Vikings. Northwest was led by freshman Morgan Pointer who scored 17 points. Erin Staunton was also in double figures with 13 points. Ragsdale junior Mikayla Pettyjohn was the leading scorer for the Tigers with 12 points.

  1. NW did a descent job moving the ball and cutting to the basket. Not sure if it was good “D” or just poor offensive scheme for Ragsdale? Did not see the Rouse kid?

  2. Ragsdale lives and dies by the outside shot and they got no open looks last night. Other than Rouse who hit 6 treys, no one else could hit a shot and the inside game didn’t produce anything either. Probable a combination of bad offensive night combined with good switching/pressure defense.

Also, complete change in offensive strategy for NWG. In the TIMCO they went 8 for 26 from three point line. Last night they hit 7 threes, but did not shoot that much from deep, instead getting the ball inside with excellent ball movement.

Rouse is no longer at Ragsdale. Transferred to GDS and reclassed as a junior.

  3. Reavis did change offensive approach from the TIMCO. There was no adjust ment from Ragsdale has they were getting beat on back door cuts. Never seen the strategy to start fouling with 5 minutes to go and down 10! Didnt know that Ragsdale lost another top player.

  4. The Northwest Guilford Vikings didn’t guard Bryant all night and we(Ragsdale) didn’t guard any of their players. These are the only two teams in the triad that do not follow fundamental basketball 101. Both teams just focus on offense and don’t realize it is defense that wins championships. I would like to see a practice from each team to see how much they really work on defense. I bet both practices spend 75% or more time on offense.
