GC Men’s Basketball Beats Averett 81-72 to Snap Three Game Skid

The Greensboro College men’s basketball team snapped a three game losing streak with an 81-72 road win at Averett on Saturday. The Pride improve to 7-7 on the season and 2-4 in the USA South with the victory.

Greensboro led for most of the first half after gaining some seperation at 16-11 just seven minutes into the game. The Pride would grow the advantage to its largest first half mark at 25-17 with 7:49 on the clock.

With Greensboro leading 32-26, the Cougars went on a 7-0 run to retake the lead with 1:11 to go in the half. The teams traded buckets in the final minute before Chakiris Moss knocked down a last second three to put The Pride on top 38-36 going into the break.

Greensboro extended the margin to 44-38 in the opening minute of the second half until Averett ran off six straight points to knot the game at 44-44.

The Pride answered with a 7-0 run of their own to grab a 51-44 lead at the 14:22 mark. The Cougars would climb back to within 54-53 with 10:57 remaining in the game.

Greensboro would gain some breathing room with a 10-0 spurt to make the score 64-53 with 7:36 to go. The cushion would hold up as Averett narrowed the decifit to 69-64 late but could not get any closer down the stretch.

Damian Dixon recorded a game high 21 points to lead four Pride players in double figures. He also grabbed 11 rebounds to finish the game with a double-double. Luqman Tijani added 19 points with Brian Thomas and Devonta Davis adding ten apiece.

Greensboro shot 47% from the floor for the game and connected on 35% of its opportunities from beyond the arc. The Pride forced 19 turnovers but were outrebounded 43-39.

Next up for Greensboro is a road date at LaGrange on January 19. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
