GC Women’s Basketball Drops Road Contest at Maryville 70-53

The Pride women’s basketball team was unable to keep up with Maryville (11-1, 4-0) on Saturday in a 70-53 road defeat. The Scots broke open a tight game down the stretch in the first half and held off Greensboro (6-5, 2-3) for the USA South Athletic Conference win.

The Pride held a 16-13 lead following a layup by Chevena Pickard with 7:26 showing on the clock. Maryville responded with a 10-1 run over the next three minutes to grab a 23-17 advantage.

With 1:35 to go in the first half, Bianca Richburg nailed a jumper to close the margin to 25-22. The Scots took control from there, scoring the final six points of the half to into the locker room on top 31-22.

The Maryville lead reached double figures at 36-26 just over two minutes into the second half and Greensboro would not recover from there. The Pride briefly brought the deficit back under ten at the midway point in the second frame before the Scots pulled away for the final tally of 70-53.

Richburg notched her tenth straight double-double with a game high 27 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Pickard was the only other Greensboro player to hit double digits in scoring with ten. She also added seven assists.

The Pride finished the game shooting 29.3% from the field compared to 43.3% for Maryville. The Scots also held a 42-37 advantage on the boards and forced Greensboro into 16 turnovers on the day.

The Pride will have a short turnaround with a 2 p.m. conference showdown at Ferrum scheduled for Sunday.
