Elon Women¹s Tennis Wraps Up Day One of Wake Winter Classic

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team concluded day one of the Wake Forest Fall Winter Classic today, Jan. 19, in its 2013 season opener.

The Phoenix opened the tournament in doubles action versus Radford, sweeping all three matches.

Jordan Johnston and Frida Jansaker claimed an 8-2 win over Taylor Newman and Meg Napolitano, while Bryn Khoury and Maria Camara Ruiz registered an 8-6 win against Gemma Valls and Hana Babic. In Elon’s final double match, Viviana Stavreva and Taylor Casey topped Allison Michael and Taylor Fay, 8-1.

In singles against East Tennessee State, the Phoenix had several outstanding performances.

At No. 1, Johnston grinded out a three-set win, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (3), over Antonia Kolovou to earn her first win of the year.

It was no sweat for Jansaker at No. 2 singles, as she defeated ETSU’s Giulia Andreazza, 6-0, 6-1.

Briana Berne, ranked 119th in the nation, won her first match of the year, topping ETSU’s Kelsey Williams in three sets. After dropping the first set, 6-2, Berne stormed back and grinded out a 6-4 victory in the second and a tight 7-6 (7-3) decision in the third.

Tomorrow, Elon faces Wake Forest in doubles at noon before facing Radford in singles afterward.
