GC Women’s Basketball Rallies Past William Peace to Snap Skid

The Greensboro College women’s basketball team rallied from an eight point halftime deficit to knock off William Peace (5-10, 1-7 USA South) 62-53 on Saturday. With the win, The Pride snap a five game losing streak and improve to 7-7 overall and 3-5 in the USA South.

The Pacers controlled the tempo out of the gate, taking a 6-0 lead early in the game. Greensboro came to life three minutes into play, going on an 9-2 run to take its first lead at 9-8 following a layup by Jena Cabe.

William Peace quickly turned the tables on The Pride with a 12-1 spurt to grab a double digit lead at 20-10 with 7:49 left in the first half. Greensboro would get no closer then five points down the stretch and went into the break trailing 32-24.

The Pride picked up the intensity coming out of the locker room in the second half, outscoring the Pacers 14-4 in the opening minutes to regain the advantage at 38-36.

Greensboro would continue to pour it on, extending the margin to 49-39 with 8:06 to go in the game. The Pacers hung tough, bringing the gap within 49-45 and and 55-50 before The Pride put the game away with free throws in the waning minutes.

Three Greensboro players reached double figures in scoring, led by the conference’s leading scorer Bianca Richburg with 19. Cabe contributed 13 points, while Chevena Pickard added 12.

The trio also had a solid game on the boards to help Greensboro even the rebounding category at 38-38. Richburg notched her 12th straight double-double performance with 11 rebounds on the afternoon. Cabe grabbed nine rebounds with Pickard pulling down eight.

The Pride shot 35.1% from the field and went 6-21 from three, including a 4-12 mark in the second half. The Pacers shot 34.5% from the field and went 3-16 from beyond the arc, and were limited to a 23.1% shooting effort in the second half, while connecting on just 1-7 three point attempts.

Greensboro will hit the road again on Wednesday at Meredith. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
