Elon Closes Out Wake Winter Women’s Tennis Classic in Impressive Fashion

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team closed out the Wake Forest Winter Classic in impressive fashion today, Jan. 21, by winning five of six singles matches versus the host Demon Deacons and two of three doubles matches against East Tennessee State.

Jordan Johnston and Frida Jansaker claimed wins at the No. 1 and 2 singles positions versus Wake’s Kasey Gardiner and Xue Zhang to give the Phoenix momentum. Johnston defeated Gardiner in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0, while Jansaker was victorious against Zhang, 6-4, 6-3.

Bryn Khoury showed incredible toughness against Wake Forest’s Karen Forman at No. 4 singles, bouncing back from a first-set loss to win the next two for the match victory. Khoury dropped the opening set, 7-5, but stormed back to win the next two, 6-3, 6-2.

Barbora Lazarova topped Brigita Bercyte, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 5 singles, while 119th-ranked Briana Berne was victorious at No. 6 with a 6-2, 6-2, decision versus Catherine Roach.

In doubles, Johnston and Jansaker improved to 3-0 on the year with an 8-5 decision against ETSU’s Anna Gerbasi and Lyn Yee Choo. At No. 3 doubles, Lazarova and Viviana Stavreva registered an 8-2 win over Sofia Espana and Salma Dahbi.

Elon returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 23, when it heads to Chapel Hill, N.C., to face North Carolina.
