College Women’s Basketball Final – Guilford 73, Emory & Henry 58

EMORY, Va. – Junior Morgan King (Teachey, N.C./New Hanover) scored 16 of her career-high 22 points in the second half to rally Guilford College past Emory & Henry College, 73-58, for the Quakers’ seventh straight win.

The host Wasps (7-10, 4-5 ODAC) grabbed an early 15-5 lead before Guilford (15-3, 8-1 ODAC) answered with a 16-3 run to take a 21-18 advantage. The teams traded baskets over the half’s final seven minutes before Emory & Henry’s Carlyta Hamm scored with 27 seconds left, which gave the hosts a 28-27 halftime edge.

King and Gabby Oglesby (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) both scored four points during a decisive 13-0 run to start the second half. Emory & Henry battled back to within six points midway through the frame, but the inside play of King and Oglesby proved too much. Guilford’s starting frontcourt of King, Oglesby and Jaclyn Nucci combined to outscore Emory & Henry, 34-30, in the second half. The Quakers shot just under 59 percent from the floor in the period and 53.3% for the game.

King, who made 10-of-14 field goals, matched her career scoring high set as a rookie. She also collected seven rebounds, three off the offensive glass. Nucci finished with 14 points and Brittany Drew (Greensboro, N.C./Page) added 13 off the bench. Oglesby finished with 10 points, all in the second half. Brittany Atwater scored five points and led Guilford with six assists and eight rebounds.

JoBeth Wright led Emory & Henry with 14 points before fouling out. Teammate Kristie Langley added 12.

Guilford returns home to host league-rival Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday (1/26) at 2:00 p.m. The Quakers are bidding for their 11th win in 12 games.
