Game Report: Northeast @ Southwest Guilford Boys Basketball

It was a heavy weight bout tonight here at The Ranch, as the Rams of Northeast came to face off against the Cowboys of Southwest.

Both teams came into tonight off of tough wins, as Southwest looked to remain perfect on the season, while the Rams were trying to give the Cowboys their first loss on the year. As the game opened up the Rams came in aggressive, quick, and determined. Northeast showed in the first four and a half minutes why they are so highly respected, going up 15-4. The Cowboys were able to get very little traction by scoring the next 6 points, but a putback just before the buzzer put the Rams up 19-10, as well as keeping Leach scoreless in the opening 8 minutes.

A brief discussion of sticking together and being more aggressive was heard by the Cowboys as within the first 48 seconds of the second quarter it was 19-16, and by the 6:15 mark a three pointer by Leach gave the Cowboys the lead for the first time all night at 20-19, and for the rest of the game. The blitz continued for another 8 straight points as Southwest held the Rams scoreless in the stanza until the 4:11 mark to make it 28-21.

The hosts held the lead and momentum despite a deep 3 pointer by NE’s Jeremy Harris just before the break making it 36-32.

The second half started as a back and forth battle, but the Cowboys responded and held momentum as they built the lead to 52-42 at the 2:26 mark. The Rams tried to fight back into it outscoring the Cowboys to end the third 8-4, taking the tally to 56-50 headed into the fourth.

The final frame opened with another steady dose of SW basketball as the lead hovered around 10 the entire frame until an uncontested layup at the buzzer by the Rams put the final tally at 80-71. The Cowboys played a tremendous team game and was able to control the final 3 quarters after a sluggish opening.

Northeast was lead by Mohammed Tijani with 26 points. The Cowboys remain perfect at 16-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play. SW was lead by Terrell Leach (24, 8 Reb), KJ Langley (20, 2 Reb, 2 Stl, 2 Ast), and DJ Chamblee’s double double 17 and 10 Rebs.

Next up for the Cowboys is another non-conference matchup down against Southern Alamance.

  1. Great high school basketball game! Terrell Leach is the leader of this team, but this group of young men play as a team and they proved that once again this evening. Just a great team effort.
