GC Women’s Basketball Holds Off Meredith for 72-67 Win

The Pride women’s basketball team held off a pesky Meredith (5-10 Overall, 2-7 USA South) squad to earn a 72-67 road victory on Wednesday night. Greensboro has now won two consecutive road games to improve to 8-7 on the season and 4-5 in the USA South.

The Pride appeared to be in control from the start, taking a 7-0 lead right out of the gate. The margin would grow to 28-16 with 7:51 to play in the first half.

The Avenging Angels had different plans, however, using a 15-3 run to knot the score at 31-31 before sending the game into the break tied at 33-33.

Meredith scored the first three points of the second half to take their first lead of the night at 36-33. Greensboro would wake up from its drought, going on a 12-1 spurt to grab a 45-37 advantage with 14:21 to go in the game.

The Avenging Angels would not go away, pulling to within 47-44 with 12:09 left. After The Pride extended the lead back to 53-46, Meredith would reel off an 11-4 spurt to tie the game again at 57-57 with 3:54 showing on the clock.

Greensboro put the next four points on the board to go ahead 61-57 but would have to hold off a hungry Avenging Angel squad down the stretch. Leading 70-67 with 13 seconds to go, Stacy Hicks would come up with a turnover for The Pride.

After running the clock down to two seconds, Hicks was fouled and sent to the line. She calmly drained both attempts to ice the game and send The Pride home victorious.

Bianca Richburg scored a game high 31 points but saw her double-double streak come to end at 13. She finished the night with seven rebounds.

Also reaching double figures in scoring was Jena Cabe with 13 points. Alicia Burr and Chevena Pickard each added nine while Stacy Hicks contributed eight. Pickard led the way on the boards for Greensboro with nine.

Overall, The Pride shot 46.3% from the field and hit 5-15 three points attempts. Greensboro was outrebounded 38-32 but forced 18 turnovers while committing 15.

The Pride will be back at home for the first time since January 5 when Piedmont comes to town on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. with a special Mayo C. Harlow Court dedication to follow the conclusion.
