LYNCHBURG, Va.—Guilford College’s men’s indoor track and field team challenged several season-high marks at the Liberty University Open, which concluded Saturday. The meet featured NCAA Division I, II, and III schools including five Old Dominion Athletic Conference members.
Andris Goncarovs (15:31.05) led the Quakers and Division III runners in Friday’s 5,000-meter run with a second-place finish overall. Goncarovs’ mark was almost nine seconds off the season-best time. Chad Norton (15:45.26) finished fourth overall, while David Cason (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) (15:49.30) placed fifth. Both Norton and Cason only trailed Goncarovs amongst Division III competition.
Goncarovs (4:29.71) placed fourth among Division III contestants in the mile run, .21 seconds off his season-best mark. Cason (4:32.05) finished sixth amongst Division III competitors, 1.45 seconds off his season-best time.
Sherod Johnson (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) (24.52 seconds) earned the Quakers’ second-best mark this season in the 200-meter dash, missing the season-best by .78 seconds.
In the field, Alex Smith (Pinnacle, N.C./West Stokes) (6.29 meters) placed third amongst Division III competitors in the long jump, the best mark by a Guilford jumper in two years. Smith (12.96 meters) finished fourth among Division III jumpers and missed his season and school-best mark by .17 meters.
Jennifer Thomas (Randleman, N.C./Randleman) (30.74 seconds) broke the school record in the 200-meter dash. She challenged her own school record in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.93, .13 seconds off her record time.
Guilford’s 4×400 meter relay team of Rebecca Reyna (Liberty, N.C./Southern Alamance), Jasmine O’Neill (Winston-Salem, N.C./Parkland), Rachel Flint, and Pasangi Perera tied the school standard of 4:55.91.
Reyna (2:39.71) challenged the school record in the 800 meter by 2.23 seconds.
Malikah French (1:08.88) missed the school record in the 400 meters by .17 seconds. She also neared her top high jump mark of the year, missing by just .02 meters with a leap of 1.40 meters.
Kaylea Trogdon (Archdale, N.C./Wheatmore) (4.55 meters) missed her own school-best mark in the long jump by just .07 meters.
Guilford returns to action Feb. 1-2 in the Hilton Garden Inn Invitational at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C.
