College Men’s Basketball Final – #23 Hampden-Sydney 74, Guilford 52

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Leon Hargrove’s 15 points helped Hampden-Sydney College avenge an earlier loss to Guilford College with a 76-52 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win Saturday.

The Tigers (17-2, 9-1 ODAC), ranked 23rd in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, have won six straight and 15 of their last 16. The lone setback was a 68-54 decision at Guilford (14-5, 6-4 ODAC) Jan. 5 where Hampden-Sydney shot a season-low 32 percent from the floor.

Hargrove led Hampden-Sydney to a 41-21 halftime lead with nine points and five assists off the bench. He had six straight points and the Tigers canned three three-pointers during a 21-7 run early in the half. The Tigers knocked down seven of their 10 three-pointers and held Guilford to just 28 percent shooting in the opening frame.

Guilford senior Josh Pittman (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) scored eight of his game-high 24 points in a 10-2 Quakers’ run to start the second half, but the visitors could not sustain the momentum. Hampden-Sydney scored nine of the game’s next 10 points and allowed Guilford no closer than 14 the rest of the way.

Khobi Williamson scored 14 points and collected nine rebounds and three blocks for the Tigers, who had 12 different scorers. Harrison George chipped in 10 points and four assists off the bench. Keegan Weitzel finished with eight points and six rebounds.

Pittman knocked down five three-pointers on the way to his seventh 20-point game of the season. Rookie Zeb Richardson (West Jefferson, N.C./Ashe County) added 10 points and Jake Hopkins (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) had nine rebounds for the Quakers, who have dropped three straight ODAC games for the first time since 2006.

The Quakers visit Roanoke College Wednesday (1/30) in a 7:00 p.m. ODAC affair.
