College Women’s Basketball Final – Guilford 58, Va. Wesleyan 49

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior forward Gabby Oglesby (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) scored 10 of her game-high 14 points in the second half of Guilford College’s 58-49 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win Saturday over visiting Virginia Wesleyan College. The victory extended Guilford’s (16-3, 9-1 ODAC) winning streak to a season-high eight games and completed a sweep of the season series with the Marlins (11-8, 6-4 ODAC).

Oglesby also collected six of the Quakers’ school-record 11 blocks in the game. Guilford’s interior defense and the Marlins’ one-for-19 performance from three-point land contributed to Virginia Wesleyan’s to 26.2 field-goal shooting percentage.

Despite their shooting woes, the Marlins stayed close for most of the game and held a brief lead in the second half. Seymonne Newsome’s two free throws with 8:49 left in regulation gave Virginia Wesleyan a 38-36 edge, its lone lead of the game. Guilford’s Kayla Adams (Rural Hall, N.C./North Forsyth) answered at the other end with the game’s first three-pointer to restore the Quakers’ lead.

Adams’ trifecta with 4:18 to play gave Guilford its biggest lead of the game to that point, 48-42. Virginia Wesleyan drew no closer than four the rest of the way and Guilford sealed the win with six free throws in the final 35 seconds.

Oglesby, Brittany Atwater (Durham, N.C./Ravenscroft) and Morgan King (Teachey, N.C./New Hanover) all scored 14 points for the Quakers. Atwater matched her career high with 10 rebounds and fell three assists shy of a triple double. King also had 10 boards and Oglesby nine, which helped the Quakers to a 44-35 rebounding edge. King added four rejections as Guilford broke the previous team standard of 10 blocks, set last season versus Randolph College.

Nancy Kelly paced Virginia Wesleyan with 11 points and added six rebounds. Newsome, Rachael Miller and Andrea Paphites netted eight points apiece and Kerri Leanne-Taylor collected a club-high eight rebounds.

Guilford travels to Roanoke College Tuesday (1/29) for a 7:00 p.m. ODAC affair.
