Elon and UNCG Men’s Basketball Meet Thursday Night at Greensboro Coliseum

ELON, N.C. – Winners of its last five games, the Elon University men’s basketball team makes the short trek to the Greensboro Coliseum on Thursday night, Jan. 31, when it takes on local rival UNCG in a key Southern Conference matchup. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.

THE SERIES: Thursday night marks the 33rd all-time meeting between Elon and UNCG. Elon leads the series, 19-13, and has won five straight against the Spartans. Elon has a 10-9 mark versus UNCG since joining the Southern Conference. In games played in Greensboro, Elon has a 5-7 record. The last time the two teams met at the Greensboro Coliseum was Dec. 5, 2011, when the Phoenix came away with an 80-72 win. Lucas Troutman and Jack Isenbarger both tallied a team-high 19 points for the Phoenix, while UNCG’s Trevis Simpson dumped in 27 points for the Spartans.

LAST MEETING: Behind a record crowd of 1,804, Elon defeated the Spartans, 93-79, on Feb. 25, 2012, inside Alumni Gym. Elon never trailed after jumping out to a 21-2 lead to start the game, draining 10-of-20 from long distance and reaching the free throw line 39 times. The Phoenix put four in double figures in the win, as Jack Isenbarger led the way with 24 points, nailing six shots from beyond the arc. Ryley Beaumont scored 20 points as well, which was a career high at the time. Sebastian Koch hauled down 12 boards in the win.

LOOKING BACK: Elon claimed a 70-66 road win over The Citadel on Saturday, Jan. 26, in Charleston, S.C., as the Phoenix knocked down 12-of-35 from beyond the arc to keep the Bulldogs at arm’s length. Rookie Tanner Samson scored a season-high 15 points in the win, knocking down five triples, while Jack Isenbarger scored a team-high 22 points.

LOOKING AHEAD: Following Thursday’s contest at UNCG, Elon returns to Alumni Gym on Saturday night, Feb. 2, for a Southern Conference showdown with Samford.

APPROACHING A MILESTONE: Lucas Troutman is looking to become the 36th player in Elon men’s basketball history to reach the 1,000-point milestone, as the Belton, S.C., native enters Thursday’s game with 976 career points. Troutman is looking to become the second Phoenix player to reach the 1,000-point plateau this season, as teammate Jack Isenbarger scored his 1,000th-career point against Chattanooga on Jan. 24.
