Elon Women’s Basketball Travels to Boone to Face Mountaineers Saturday

ELON, N.C. – The Elon women’s basketball team (11-8, 8-2) opens the month of February with a trip to the mountains to play Appalachian State (12-5, 6-3) on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 12: 30 p.m. in the Holmes Center. The game will be available on ESPN3.com.

Last Time Out
Elon claimed a 70-59 win over Georgia Southern to finish the month of January with a 7-1 record and extend its home winning streak to six. Kelsey Evans became Elon’s blocked shots leader after surpassing the 197 career blocks in the game. She finished with her seventh double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while also recording four blocks. Ali Ford scored a game-high 23 points, while Kelsey Harris also posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards. Sam Coffer was the third player in the maroon and gold that night to record double-figures in rebounds with 11 of her own.

Scouting the Mountaineers
Appalachian State is currently on a two-game losing skid after dropping contests at Chattanooga and Samford last weekend. As a team, the Mountaineers lead the conference in scoring offense, field goal percentage and steals. Anna Freeman is the team’s leading scorer with 16.6 points per game, followed by Marayah Sydnor (14.9 ppg) and Courtney Freeman (14.0 ppg). A. Freeman is also the top rebounder on the team with 8.5 boards/game and ranks first in the SoCon in steals with 3.1 per game.

The Series
The Mountaineers own the all-time series, 20-9, and have controlled the matchups as of late, winning the last seven. The last meeting went the way of ASU by a final of 84-68 on Feb. 13, 2012, in the Holmes Center. Despite the loss, Elon had three players in double figures and Sam Coffer posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The last win for the Phoenix was on Feb. 9, 2009, in Boone.

Scoring Leader
After averaging 23 points last week, Ali Ford is leading the conference in scoring with 17.1 points per game. The senior has recorded 18 double figure and eight 20+ scoring games this season. Ford is also leading the conference in free throw percentage (93.2 percent), ranks second in three-pointers made (2.7 per game) and third in three-point percentage (39.8 percent).

Looking Ahead
The Phoenix will return home on Monday, Feb 4, to play the Catamounts of Western Carolina for the second time this season. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Alumni Gym.
