Elon Track and Field to Compete at Gene Anderson Invitational

ELON, N.C. – The Elon women’s track and field team travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. this Saturday, Feb. 2, for the Gene Anderson Invitational. The first event, the women’s weight throw, is scheduled to begin competition at 9 a.m. inside the Eddie Smith Field House.

Last Time Out
Elon competed at the Penn State National last weekend, Jan. 25-26. The Phoenix had several impressive performances and a number of records rewritten on the all-time performance list.

Charlise Morgan threw a new personal-record of 52’01” (15.87m) in the weight throw, breaking her own school-record she set just a week earlier at the Wake Forest Invitational on Jan. 19.

Emily Tryon broke her own program-record in the 3,000-meter run. Tereza Novotna and Allyson Oram joined Tryon in the top-10 of the race with times of 10:04.13 and 10:07.73, the second and third fastest times, respectively, on the program’s performance list.

Competing This Weekend

Sprints
60-meters (Kayleigh Birks, Simone Jackson and Bria Turner)
200-meters (Bria Bell, Birks and Jackson)
400-meters (Bell, Veronica Luedke, Jennifer Pash)

Bell nearly set a new personal-record in the 400-meters last weekend after clocking a time of 57.81. She also had an impressive performance in the 200-meter race with a time of 25.29. Jackson had a season-best time of 7.97 in the 60-meter dash at the Wake Forest Invitational on Jan. 19.

Hurdles
60-meters (Jennifer Esposito, Sydney Griffin, Louise Prevoteau)

Griffin will look to continue her impressive freshman campaign this weekend. The Marietta, Ga., native set a new personal-record by clocking with a 8.73 qualifying time last weekend, the second fastest time on the Elon all-time performance list. She also competed in the 200-meters at Penn State with a time of 25.40.

Fellow frosh Esposito has also established herself in her first year with the maroon and gold. The Mansfield, Mass., native ran the third fastest time in school-history in her first collegiate meet with a time of 9.04 at the Liberty Kickoff. She also finished in the top-10 at the Wake Forest Invitational.

Jumps
Marie Borowycz and Janelle McNeil will represent the maroon and gold in both the long jump and triple jump. Prevoteau will also contribute in the long jump. McNeil had a top-10 finish in the triple jump at Wake Forest with a season-best jump of 36’7.5” (11.16m).

Haley Laird and Megan Kirschling will compete in the high jump for the Phoenix. Kirschling set a new school-record in the high jump in her first collegiate meet at Liberty on Dec. 1, with a cleared height of 5’8” (1.73m) and matched it at the Wake Forest Invitational on Jan. 19, winning the title at both meets.

Laird set a new personal-best height at Wake Forest with 5’6” (1.68m), finishing as the runner-up to Kirschling. Last week at Penn State, both Kirschling and Laird finished in the top-10 with cleared heights of 5’5” (1.65m).

Distance
Tryon, Novotna and Oram will compete and represent Elon in the one-mile run. In her first-ever race in the event, Novotna ran a time of 5:01 at Wake Forest and finished third overall.

Christine Pacewicz will race in the 3,000-meter run along with Sabina Bains. Pacewicz set a new personal-record in the one-mile run last week with a time of 5:11.80, breaking into the top-five on the all-time performance list.

Brennan McDavid and Ellie Taff will race in the 800-meter run. Both runners last competed at the Wake Forest Invitational, with Taff earning a top-five finish in the event.

Throws
In throws, the trio of Morgan, Birks and Kimberlyn Holt will be in action for the Phoenix. Morgan and Holt will throw in both the shot put and weight throw, while Birks will compete only in the weight throw.

Holt had season-best toss of 49’10.5” (15.20m) in the weight throw at Wake Forest to finish in the top-five of the event.

The Phoenix will travel back to Liberty next weekend, Feb. 8, for the Liberty Quad in Lynchburg, Va.
